West Michigan families relieved their children are safe at Fort Hood

(WZZM) - Bernise Rawson of Muskegon was shocked to learn Fort Hood was on lock down this afternoon.

'That's supposed to be the safest place in the world is on an army base."

Her son, Army Private Daniel Wilhite junior is on the base.

"I talked to him once today, I called him and he didn't understand how I already new," said Rawson.

The Hertz family in Kentwood have two family members at fort hood. Their son, Captain Matt Hertz is a Black Hawk pilot.

"And my brother he is a civilian but he works in the army and his job is to help with the deployment and so he should have been in that area," said Cheryl Hertz.

Both families got word late thursday afternoon that their children and grandchildren are safe. And they're all mindful of the grieving families connected to the victims.

"I feel so sorry for the families of those soldiers and of course the ones that have been wounded, I just hope and pray that they'll recover and their families can get through this horrible time," said Harvey Hertz.

As horrible as it is, at the very least Bernise Rawson is glad the shooters were never deployed.

"I'm glad they didn't go because they wouldn't have been there to protect our troops. Imagine having somebody there and they don't have your back."
