Santa's Parade Float Needs Renovations

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- The Grand Rapids Jaycees Santa Claus Parade has been a tradition for years. But the parade that kicks off the holiday season is missing one of its most well-known floats this year.

The Santa Claus parade float has been one of the main attractions for kids across West Michigan during the holiday season. But Santa's sleigh us under construction and won't be on display this year. Organizers made the decision to begin renovations on the float with the idea of making it last for another 50 years.

Since the Grand Rapids Jaycees took over the event, their Santa float has become a fan favorite. However, the popular float is in need of some serious repairs. Organizers say the axle needs fixing among many other things. They're also looking for anyone to donate lumber that will help toward making those repairs to the float.

John & Melissa Greko, who have been instrumental in organizing the Santa parade, made the decision to park Santa Claus' float for several reasons.

"Due to economic conditions and time constraints, we made the decision to hold off on repairing it," said John Greko. "And instead of keep on doing annual minor repairs (we decided) to do a complete overall restoration of the float."

They are looking for volunteers, especially people who specialize in trailers and electrical wiring. They're also taking donations toward Santa's float that's in need of many renovations.
