Blair Moreau on how to lose one pound of fat

(WZZM) - I once heard, "You can always eat more than you can exercise" - meaning you can eat more calories in a day than you can ever exercise.

People often ask me, "Blair, how much physical activity does it take to burn a pound of fat?"

People fail to understand you have to do a whole lot of exercise to burn a pound or 3500 calories of fat. So how much physical activity does one need to participate in to burn 3500 calories?

Caloric burn depends on how much one weighs, so to keep this simple we are going to base the time and burn on 160 pound person.

To burn 3500 calories a 160 pound person would need to perform the following activities without stopping:

  • 6 hours of running at an 11mph pace

  • 7.5 hours of tennis

  • 8 hours of biking at 9.5 mph

  • 9.5 hours of weight lifting

  • 11 hours of walking at 3 mph

  • 6 hours of a moderately paced swimming

  • 12 hours of dancing

  • 12.5 hours of walking the golf course and carrying your own clubs

It takes a great deal of physical activity to decrease a pound of fat.

Though it is not unrealistic to burn 3500 calories by exercise alone, you'll lose weight faster with a combined exercise and healthy diet.
