Grand Haven Public Safety Officer sentenced to jail

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - After 20 years of upholding the law in Grand Haven,  Thomas Carey found himself facing a judge's sentence for getting woman to perform sex acts while on duty.

The allegations came to light in early June prompting an extensive investigation. Carey resigned August 25th.

"I apologize to the victims, my family, my profession and my community. I will continue to work on issues in my life that caused me to make some wrong choices in my life," said Carey, addressing the court.

Carey faced two counts of gross indecency and misconduct in office. He will serve 60 days in jail, work 150 hours of community service and will be on probation for two years.

"My concern all along was if it went to trial and we lost some arbitrator might give him his job back and I did not want him being a police officer again," said Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth.

The prosecution says as an on duty officer Carey's actions are disgraceful to law enforcement.

"The victims he picked on here while not vulnerable under the statute that describes vulnerability, did have some issues that made them more susceptible to do this than others. So yes, it was outrageous what he did," said Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth.

Because the sex acts were consensual, Carey will not be placed on the sex offender registry.

"He's remorseful, humiliated and embarrassed and over all he is very sorry," said Carey's attorney Charles Romminger.
